Oh My God
Well I worked my first overnight last night, and I can’t say it was the worst thing ever, but I do have to say that the human body was not meant for a schedule like this. People really should not be functioning at that time of night.
The worst part about it is I’d better get used to it, cause that’s going to be my schedule pretty much for the rest of the month. From the looks of it the only time I’m not working overnights for the rest of the month is next week. And this is right in the middle of Christmas and New Year’s.
What’s really bad about it is that it is mine and Whitney’s first Christmas and New Year’s actually living together, and I’m going to be squeezing in Christmas between a week of freakishly long nights…and I will be actually working during New Year’s…Happy New Year indeed.
I kind of knew getting into this line of work for a news organization that runs 24-7 would bring this kind of craziness, but now that it’s actually happening I’m a little shocked at how crazy it really is.
I just hope that paying dues is something that will be noticed and appreciated and that things will change before too long.
I think that the holidays are really the cause of this plague of a schedule, and my coming on board right before them definitely put me in the crosshairs as the scapegoat. Thanks Ted, but someday I’m going to come up with a news organization that runs 16-5 instead of 24-7, and when people try to tune in Christmas and Thanksgiving there will just be a graphic up that says “Breaking News: It’s Christmas and You’re Watching the News…Turn off your damn TV.”
